Abstract
Abstract: Procedures of algorithmic composition may be used for the treatment of single aspects of a musical task, or for determining the overall structure of a musical piece. These two alternatives imply the use of very specific approaches and aesthetic positions regarding the generation of a composition. Therefore, creating a conceptual division may further clarify the different application possibilities of particular algorithmic techniques. Algorithmic composition is used either for creating genuine, original compositions, or in the field of style imitation, where musical material is generated according to a given style or represents an attempt to verify a musical analysis by resynthesis. The fact that the procedures described in this work are mainly used for tasks of style imitation, may partly be explained by the environment the authors are working in, and their motivation for applying algorithms to the generation of musical structure.
